Worldart is pleased to announce the exhibition of a body of abstract paintings by Dave Robertson, titled concrete trails, urban tales. The title refers to the artists’ fascination with marks and textures visible on urban structures, which range  from graffiti painted over to scratches left by motorists.
Translating this ‘found imagery’ into a series of familiar shapes and abstract gestures, Robertson creates beautifully balanced and engaging compositions. Through his use of multiple layers in the form of overlapping sections of painted surfaces, he shows evidence of past activity and reminds us of the ever-changing nature of cityscapes. Containing all the elements that one looks for in a good abstract painting, these works evoke an emotional response that is difficult to ignore.

The exhibition will run from 26 February – 12 March 2011 at the Worldart Gallery.

Over the last few years, the young Michael Taylor has quietly yet steadily built up a loyal following among the younger section of serious art collectors around the country. With his solo show at Worldart last year sold out within the first few days, Cape Town can now look forward to his 2010 exhibition at the same gallery.

His trademark confident and skilful illustrative style with sometimes dark and mostly humorous undertones is still the essence of his paintings. The title of this body of work is The lion’s den and features a subversive look at the common perceptions of horoscopic astrology. “These images are interpretations of human characteristics as seen specifically through the eyes of one character, the Leo” says Taylor.

The exhibition runs from 28 August – 12 September 2010.

Big show/Small city with Wayne Barker and Sanson Mnisi.

Wayne Barker and Samson Mnisi collaborate to show new artworks in the main gallery. Barker will show watercolour paintings that he painted recently on a visit to Cape Town, while Samson Mnisi will continue his exploration of an African abstraction.

In the large space, the Artspace and Worldart mentorship programme will be showing its second exhibition for 2008. Entitled Bollywood, Hollywood, Nollywood, this exhibition sees the product of 2004 Brett Kebble Art Award winner, Tanya Poole mentoring two young artists from Grahamstown, Lindi Arbi and Nomusa Makhubu.

A landscape is generally understood to portray the land’s visible features as well as living, abstract and human elements and the impact they have.

In typical Waldeck style, his chosen tool to explore the landscape is anarchy. The anatomy of the painting is used to illustrate his disgust at the plagues that keep torturing our landscapes. “I found the slashing and crunching that went with the creation of these works very liberating,” he says.

Swanepoel again, has a minimalist approach. His works are characterised by layering of used canvases and varnish. Visually and conceptually this changes the landscape as we know it leaving the onlooker with a new abstract view. But his modern approach never disregards the familiarity of the surroundings we know..

A noteworthy event on this year’s arts calendar, this exhibition will feature a new series of lithographs that André Naude produced at the Artists’ Press studio in Mpumalanga. This unique workplace near White River offers artists the opportunity to experiment under the guidance of master printmaker Mark Attwood. The studio has already played host to top artists such as Robert Hodgins, William Kentridge, Conrad Botes and Colbert Mashile, to name but a few. Many of their numbered prints have found their way to important art collections right across the world.
